"Nowhere to Run to Howard"

Our world and culture grow darker by the day – just look around. Parents are killing their own children, we have endless suicide bombings, ugly politics, corporate scandals and freefalling morals are hitting new lows. All of this sometimes has me clamoring, “Okay Lord, please rapture me out of here!” Sure that would be great, but there is so much more for us to do down here before the Lord comes for His Church. With each passing generation, people are growing further and further from the truth, God’s truth. It’s amazing how little people know about the God of the Bible. I’m not being judgmental, I’m just being honest. The people in our culture are so busy running here and there and chasing this or that, it’s no wonder that they have no time to read about God let alone connect with Him. The apostle Paul warns us about this in the Book of Romans:

“They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator - who is forever praised. Amen.
Romans 1:25 (New International Version)

That’s where we Christians come in. It’s up to us to bring light to this ever darkening world. Jesus told us, “As long as it is day, we must do the work of Him who sent Me. Night is coming, when no one can work.” (John 9:4). Night is definitely coming, make no mistake about that, but until that time we need to share the truth about salvation through Jesus Christ. That’s why I left the corporate world and joined God in getting the truth out. The mission statement of our ministry is “Reaching people for Jesus and getting the truth out through Christian teaching and entertainment.” The airwaves are polluted with lies, foul language and vulgar content. We need to counter all that with God’s truth. Faith, Hope, Love & Laughter is using humor, drama, music and solid biblical teaching to accomplish this. We’re making use of live performances, original videos and the internet to get the truth out in a way that isn’t threatening to people. In fact our tagline is “Laugh, learn and grow with God.” That’s a far cry from shock jock Howard Stern and his vulgar form of entertainment. When the FCC started clamping down on him for his crude antics, Stern jumped ship from CBS radio to Sirius Satellite. Unlike broadcast radio, satellite transmissions from outer space don’t have federally mandated decency standards. Stern can now say and do whatever he wishes. Sirius was licking their chops as they signed up this shock jock and envisioned his faithful following switching over from free radio to pay radio. Surely Stern listeners would gladly pay to be able to hear his unbridled filth. That was back in 2004 and I remember thinking why do people listen to that guy and heaven help us now that he’s unrestricted by the FCC. Well I’m glad to report that the God of heaven is helping us. You see the self-proclaimed King of All Media – Howard Stern -  came to Sirius at a tremendous cost: $500 million in cash and stock. Yet he’s not drawing the vast numbers of paying subscribers that Sirius was counting on.  People aren’t so willing to pay for his kind of entertainment. Sirius’ programming costs keep escalating. Combine that with Stern’s steep overhead and you get a record loss of $853 last year (on sales of $242 million). The stock is down some 44%. Things aren’t looking too good for Sirius or for Stern. It’s a little too early to celebrate, but remember this:  “God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction.” (Galatians 6:7-8). We can do our part by not listening to foul programs such as Stern’s and by getting God’s truth out in any manner that we can. It may seem futile, but don’t give up. This same chapter of Galatians assures us that we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
