Statement of Faith

We believe…There is only One True God: “…so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the LORD is God and that there is no other”. (1 Kings 8:60)

  1. Regardless of what we think: Many people have differing ideas about the nature of God. Most of those ideas have one thing in common – they are the product of human intellect! When it comes to our Creator, it matters very little who we think God is. The Bible is the only trustworthy source for understanding Him.
  2. The Bible is the word of God, fully inspired and without error in the original manuscripts. It was written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and it has supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct. The Holy Spirit inspired human authors to write the books of the Bible. Every word of scripture is chosen by God himself. The Bible is God’s love letter to all of humanity and is the final authority in every issue it communicates. It is complete truth, and we can trust it for all matters in this life and eternity
  3. Attributes of God: He is the sovereign LORD over all the universe, including every physical and spiritual realm. He is the living God who spoke the heavens and the earth into existence and made man in His own image (Genesis 1:1, 26). Among His innumerable personal attributes such as holiness, righteousness, graciousness, truthfulness and compassion, He possesses certain infinite attributes that are true of God and God alone:
    • -He is self-existent - “I AM WHO I AM”, God did not originate from any other source (Exodus 3:14).
    • -He is eternal - timeless with no beginning or end (“everlasting to everlasting”, Psalm 90:2).
    • -He is immutable- God cannot change with regard to His existence, character, purposes or promises (He “does not change like shifting shadows”, James 1:17).
    • -He is sovereign - God is supreme ruler and will never be dethroned, Ephesians 1).
    • -He is omnipresent - God is everywhere (Psalm 139:7-12).
    • -He is omnipotent - God is all powerful (Revelation 19:6).
    • -He is omniscient -God knows all things actual and possible (Matthew 11:21).
  4. The Trinity: The One true God is eternally existent in three Persons: Father, son and Holy Spirit .Although it might be difficult for the human mind to comprehend, the Bible teaches that He is one yet has existed since the beginning of time as three distinct and equal persons (each of whom possesses equally all the attributes of Deity and the characteristics of personality).
  5. Jesus Christ: The Lord Jesus is God’s Son and an equal of the Father. He has existed from the beginning of time, yet lived on earth during the first century A.D. Throughout His earthly life, he was completely God and completely human at the same time. After living a perfect, sinless life, Jesus offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice for every human being who has ever lived by dying on a Roman cross. After three days in the grave, he defeated sin and death by rising from the grave. He then ascended to Heaven and will return to earth one day to reign as King.
  6. The Holy Spirit: The Holy Spirit is a full and equal part of the Trinity. He works in the world to make all people understand their need for Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit lives inside every follower of Jesus from the moment they decide to follow Him. The Spirit is our power source for life, ministry and spiritual growth. To tap into that power, we must continually yield to the Holy Spirit.
  7. Who is Man? We are the pinnacle of God’s creation and the only being on the earth whom God made in His own spiritual image, with the moral ability to choose right from wrong. Every person, although endowed with the image of God, inherited a disobedient heart from Adam, the very first man. This attitude of disobedience (called sin in the Bible) – unless rectified through Christ – forever keeps man from forming a relationship with his Creator. This attitude also keeps us from being the kind of person God created us to be.
  8. Salvation: Our disobedient nature has eternally separated us from our Creator. No matter how hard we try, we can never earn our way back into God’s presence. Our only hope is to trust Jesus as God’s provision for our disobedience. Those who repent of their sins and put their trust in Jesus Christ as Savior, are regenerated by the power of the Holy Spirit. Whenever you make that decision, you step into the eternal and abundant life Jesus promises for all believers.
  9. We are saved by grace for good works (a gift that cannot be earned): “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God- not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:8-10).
  10. Jesus Christ is the ONLY Way to heaven. Have you read the gospel accounts of Jesus’ death? Have you seen the film “The Passion of the Christ”? If it were possible for a person to get to heaven by some means other than Christ, why would God put Himself through the humiliation, brutality and agony of a Roman crucifixion? God loves us that much! “For God so loved the world that He gave His One and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). In obedience to His Father’s will and out of love for us, Jesus took our punishment: “But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him, and by His wounds we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5).

Regardless of what we choose to believe about which path leads to heaven, the Bible is clear on this one: Jesus is the only way, He is the gate: “I am the gate; whoever enters through Me will be saved” ( John 10:9). No, there are no other gates or avenues for salvation: “Jesus answered, I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. (John 14:6). “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).
  11. The Church: As believers in Jesus Christ, we are members of His universal Church. The local church is the place that God has designed for His people to worship Him, observe the ordinances of baptism and celebrate communion and love other Christians. Having embraced Jesus Christ by faith, we are to make Him known to non-Christians in our sphere of influence and to a needy world
  12. The second coming of Jesus & The Judgment: God, in His own time and in His own way, will bring the world to its appropriate end. According to His promise, Jesus Christ will return personally and visibly in glory to the earth; the dead will be raised; and Christ will judge all men in righteousness.

This statement of faith (all biblically-based) was carefully composed of excerpts from faith statements of Christian ministries, pastors and churches that we hold in high regard (in terms of theology and integrity). The lion’s share of our statement of faith came from Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, CA (point # 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 13). We also included excerpts from Dr. Conrad Koch’s ordination paper -Valley Community Baptist Church in Avon, CT (portions of point # 3), Insight for Living – Charles Swindoll (point # 11), and Valley Brook Community Church (my church home in Granby, CT).
